Enough! Let’s get Juwan on board. Someone make a Juwan highlight video with P. Diddy’s “I’m Coming Home” playing!
I agree, but a coach that’s got 234 wins at 66% clip and is only 42 isn’t mediocre, and both the ceiling and the floor would be higher
I’m not really sure why people say Juwan would be gone after a few years if he has success. He is already interviewing for nba jobs. If he isn’t able to land one right now, he will in the next year or two by just staying where he’s at. If he is trying to land the job at Michigan it tells me he probably wants to stay there a while, because he doesn’t need to use it as a stepping stone. He is well on his way to becoming an nba coach on his current path.
I’d rather take a leap of faith with Juwan than any other coach on the list.
The other candidates look like a list a middling Big Least team would be pursuing, not Michigan.
I can’t imagine Juwan failing if he came here. He would have a tremendous amount of support and would be a great recruiter for countless reasons. If we were able to keep our assistants I think it would be a great situation. I think any of our 4 and 5 guys especially (even Jalen Wilson if he decides to stick with Michigan) would have to be thrilled getting Juwan Howard on board for developmental purposes. I don’t think getting Juwan is even a leap of faith. I would feel confident that he would get the job done. Especially considering he would be inheriting an already thriving program. Its not like he would return to his alma mater as a savior that has to raise it up from the ashes.
Given that Juwan likely demand much less
than some other candidates, Warde should give him a package so that he can make his assistant best paid in college basketball.
Lol, what? Did livers, z, and teske put their name in the protocol?
You must be more optimistic on the other two starters and the entirely unproven bench than I am. Three great players is a great foundation if they stay healthy, or choose to stay in the program even - weirder things have happened.
I do have faith in the other guys and This is probably the least optimistic I’ve been in 7 years but it’s not about next year. As long as we return everyone from last years squad this team will be very good, no matter who the coach is. Literally not a coach in the land could do that much damage next year. Zavier could run the team and it would be top twenty five.
My concern is three years down the road or wasting the next couple years potential more so than a five hundred record.
Lots of time left and there will be plenty more late additions (and hopefully no more subtractions) but I just can’t fathom a team losing Ignas Brazdeikis, Charles Matthews, Jordan Poole, Jalen Wilson and John Beilein all in one offseason, adding little to nothing of instant impact players-wise and remaining top 25.
I also thought Jalen Wilson would be one if those instant impact starter types, so if they can re-open his recruitment and hang onto him, or hire a coach that can land a player like Jaden McDaniels, my gloomy outlook would change
Really? If you made a list of the top ten guys at every position across the country I’d be willing to bet that Zavier , teske, and livers all would be on their respective lists. Add in z ‘s leadership and a nice upperclassmen base along with nice young talent in johns and Colin and the only scenario I see a team not in the top 25 is major injuries or mass transfers.
I agree with the notion that Z/Teske/Livers is a heck of a starting point. The concern is Year 2. But Iggy’s statements keep inching back from certainty and toward coming back. He’s not getting the feedback he wants, clearly. In the absence of having Beilein, Juwan can hopefully sell him on his direct NBA experience. At this point I’d be very happy getting Juwan and paying Yak. Ant Wright points out on twitter that his kid’s going to be a SR in HS at Saline this upcoming school year. Keeping him should be doable if that’s what’s desired.
I don’t support lowballing Juwan though. Pay the going rate.
Theoretically I agree. Simpson and Teske for sure are top 10 position-wise and I like Livers But if Zavier Simpson has a shooting guard that shoots Brooks’ 27% career from three playing 30+ minutes next to him, I think it’s going to be both ugly to watch and impossible for him to be effective at all.
I know the livers as a top ten guy might be hard to imagine ( at his position) but I went through a list of guys and honestly it’s possible. I couldn’t find ten guys. I also think it’s a very good possibility that he could be the best player on the team next year.
I think Juwan would recruit well. More often than not, the NBA guys seem to do ok in that department. Penny seems to be doing ok at Memphis. The other thing is, probably has already been mentioned somewhere, but I think Juwan at least coached the Heat’s summer league team. Obviously that doesn’t count for a whole lot but it’s something to build on I guess.
Penny is not a good comparison. He’s recruiting well because he was coaching an AAU team I believe and very connected there. Pretty much all his commits so far were people he already had relationships with. We shall see what his coaching is like and what his recruiting is like after those relationships have dried up.
Better comparisons would be Ewing and Mullin, who recruited decently I believe. Nothing to write home about though.
IMO recruiting is a complete wildcard. Really hard to know. Ewing has a decently bouncy freshman SG who gave their offense a bit of life this year, but not a guy who would move the needle at Michigan. You can’t compare what he’s gonna do at Gtown to what Juwan could, potentially, at Michigan. But he’s obviously a name, he’s got rings and coached under and with and for some big names, and he’s likable.
I really do hope Juwan likes the idea of keeping Yak, who is a good recruiter. I like the idea of Juwan bringing NBA Xs and Os on offense, and even though the jobs and the game are different, I like that Juwan was immediately seen as good assistant material and has risen through the ranks and paid his dues and earned the attention he has earned on merit. The only thing G’town has going for it is nostalgia.
so yak is being interviewed by smart for leverage or its an under cover move on a candidate you wanna move on? dress it up as UT looking at Yak, but instead yak goes down and gives shaka the download on moves they have to make and figure out how to work together right away
seems way too coincidental in timing
At least Shaka is showing a gesture that he may retain Yak if offered, which is a good thing no matter how I read it.
I don’t see how Yak isn’t getting head coaching interviews anywhere after what he has been doing at Michigan.
