The Los Angeles Clippers Assistant GM is a Michigan grad and he too just publicly threw his support towards Howard getting the job.
Deandre Haynes is at the nba combine, was just in the background
Yak also gives you the recruiting. Pretty good track record there.
im all in
Still holding hope for a dream candidate but that likelihood goes down by the day so in that case letās give Juwan a shot. Unknown commodity but should be a good recruiter, is a Michigan man, and has support from LOTS of NBA people. And who knows, with Juwan, maybe that fab five reunion happens haha (for what itās worth).
Mark Hughes, i just read his comments about Coach B and Juwan.
You could also say it started with Beilein. It doesnāt happen without his decision to make a change and to give Yak an unusual amount of freedom.
I think we can agree Yaklich is a very good defensive coach with a promising career. I think i we can also agree he doesnāt have sufficient experience to take over a top tier program.
The Beilein disciple path fizzled this year when Butler has a crappy year this year and Bacari went belly up at Detroit.
I donāt think Juwan necessarily means recruiting will pickup. Do we have actual data that shows NBA guys have recruited well? Avery Johnson seems like yes, Ewing not really.
how could anyone have data on it? all assumption. but gut feel with chicago and florida ties, nba resume (as a player, coaching connections to help players navigate draft), fab five clout, lebron ties⦠heād do alright
I think having been an NBA coach probably has nothing to do with recruiting well or poorly. Juwan would recruit well because heās good at it, not because NBA coaches recruit well.
I think having been a former NBA player that some of these guys saw in TV would help.
I might be the only one that thinks hiring Howard would be a mistake. I just think that that college game is a different animal from the NBA. Each presents their own unique challenges. I would rather we hire someone with a college coaching background.
Not a recruting comment specifically, but Ewing was an assistant for 15 years and got no HC interest outside his alma mater. Juwan is clearly seen at the NBA level as a better coaching prospect.
Being an NBA player or coach doesnāt make anyone a good recruiter. Howard will still need to have to work hard at it. But if he is a good recruiter, there are a lot of things working in his favor that should improve his results.
I wouldnāt rank coaching in the NBA at the top of the list. Being part of the Fab Five is #1. I donāt care if the recruits never saw them play. Their parents and coaches did. The kids know who they are, especially ones interested in Michigan. Just being an alum helps a new coach sell his school. NBA championship rings as a player canāt hurt either. Heās going to have a great sales pitch to bigs.
Just in case anyone has forgotten, Howardās everything you want as a hoops rep for UM. His 93-94 All-American season is still recognized as he was investigated by the FBI and found to be squeaky clean. He probably has the best tourney performance other than Glen Rice. He averaged 29 PPG, 12.75 RPG, and 1.5 SPG in the 93-94 regional. Won most outstanding player for that regional.
Howard is active in fostering youth basketball activities through the Juwan Howard Foundation, which helps underprivileged youth in DC and Chicago.
He was recognized in 2001 as one of the āGood Guys in Sportsā by The Sporting News for his civic contributions.
In April 2010, Howard won the NBA Cares Community Assist Award for his community efforts, philanthropic work and charitable contributions.
For me itās Howard or Yak at this point. Donāt think it will happen⦠but as far as upside and talent, that seems to be the best available choice. Smart is settlingāUT would gladly take a buy out there. The only plus I see with Smart is that he might keep Yak, if the rumored interview happened today.
Juwan is a A+ character. In additional to everyone just said, he never lashed out at the University even though he is really close to Fisher and maintains relationships to the day.
Who has he recruited?
Heād be a good guy as far as a program ambassador while heās here. Will he be a good college coach is the real question, and if so how long does he stay. My guess is heāll be back in the NBA within 3 years if he has even a little success or heāll be fired in 4
IMO referable to having mediocrity for longer. It works or it doesnāt and you get another crack at it.
