How many favorite players have you had?

Poole was also good at a bunch of non-shooting things on offense in a way Jett wasn’t (though he could develop those things over time). Poole’s passing was sneaky good and his drives to the hoop could be magical.

this thread has taught me that I don’t appreciate glen rice enough, because I think literally everyone who listed anyone from the 80s listed him

edit: and I see superdave is typing so I know that streak is about to continue!

I mean he still holds the record for most points in a tourney run correct?

I’ll go chronologically.

  1. Rice - '89 is my first truly vivid memory of college basketball. Rice is still my all-time favorite. Most points in one tournament ever and I hope I’m not alive to ever see that record broken. (Unless it’s by another Michigan hooper)
  2. Juwan - His run in the '93-'94 tourney is second to only Rice’s performance in '89. 29 PPG, 12.8 RPG, 66% FG, and also had 4 steals in the 1st round game against Pepperdine. Most Outstanding Player in that region even with Corliss balling out and getting Arkansas to the Final Four.
  3. Chris Webber - The timeout sucked, but he was still the best player on a group of freshman and sophomores that went to back to back championships. That was ridiculous in their era and it’s still really difficult to pull off today.
  4. Jalen Rose - What isn’t to love? Met him many times around Indy when he was on the Pacers as well and he was as cool to me as anyone could hope. Shopping for CDs in Waves music with him was fun.
  5. Trey Burke - Naismith, Wooden. The Kansas shot still might be the loudest and happiest yell of my lifetime.
  6. Nik Stauskas - He’s not just a shooter.
  7. Jimmy King - This list is not going without every member of the Fab Five
  8. Ray Jackson - See King, Jimmy.
  9. Zavier Simpson - His improvement was a joy to watch and a PG draining sky hooks was too much fun.
  10. Moe Wagner - Going to National Championships is a huge deal and Moe lead us there. MSU ankle breaking is some nice icing as well.

Tried to keep this short and sweet. Could list many more like Novak, Charles Matthews, Walton, Baston, Bullock, Tractor, Taylor, and Crawford (the most screwed over player in NCAA basketball history).

Love this thread. I was doing some research on one of my all-time favorites and came across a great paragraph referencing his best game as a Wolverine. I’m posting the paragraph below, let’s play a little game, who can figure out who the player is and what game these quotes refer to??

“[Opposing team name] players were close to awestruck following the game. Guard [Opposing Player] said there was nothing [opposing team name] could do about [Michigan Player]. Center [Opposing Player] said if they knew how to stop [Michigan Player], they would have. And [Opposing team name] coach characterized the performance as Kobe Bryant-like”

has to be post-kobe, and I’m assuming it’s not anyone from ellerbe or amaker, but maybe that’s the joke and it’s about jevohn shepherd going off for a game or something

It’s Matt Vogrich

I’m gonna guess Rakhman. Figure it has to be a wing (Kobe like) that was capable of going off.

Manny Harris would be the other guess.

This caused me to go look up some Matt Vogrich numbers. Matt’s career high was 11, achieved twice, one instance of which was in the NCAA Tournament massacre of Tennessee in 2011. His best performance in a Michigan uniform came in his first appearance in a Michigan uniform when he went 5/5 from 3 in an exhibition win over NMU.

All this to say, no, I don’t think any opposing coach ever compared Matt to Kobe Bryant.

Rahkman and Manny are both incorrect

I assume it’s not trey because it’s too easy, but he did have that weird little baseline fadeaway that was clearly a kobe thing

Jamal Crawford??

If there is 1 player in Michigan history who said “Kobe!” While shooting a balled up piece of paper onto a trash basket, it’s Matt Vogrich

I will always remember that first Vogrich game. After that I thought he was gonna be a game changing shooter for Beilein that we hadn’t gotten yet

if there are 2, the other one is spike

Daniel Horton

If there are 3, the third one is Blake McLimans

Ding ding ding! Daniel Horton dropped 39 against Illinois in one of the best performances I can ever remember at Crisler. 25 in the second half and Michigan beat a powerhouse Illinois team to seemingly send them to the dance. Of course, in classic Amaker fashion, that team would not win another game before Selection Sunday and miss the tournament.

Here’s the actual quote: Illinois players were close to awestruck following the game. Guard Chester Frazier said there was nothing the Illini could do about Horton. Center James Augustine said if they knew how to stop Horton, they would have. And Illinois coach Bruce Weber characterized Horton’s performance as Kobe Bryant-like.
