Game 4: UCF at Michigan Open Thread

I guess idk why people are so surprised by this, they played for arguably the best aau program and in the best high school conference in America. Then you factor in Dickinson is super old for his grade and they are both physically ready. Really the only thing I thought would prevent Williams from being an early impact guy was wing depth.

1.26 PPP despite shooting 20% from 3 and 2 points from Franz and Livers. As bad as our defense has point at points this year the offense has been equally good, if not better

I think it looked like an over dribble because the guy flopped and he tripped over him.

He has nice form. He shot well in HS and has shot well in spurts at Michigan. I kind of expected him to be a solid shooter by this point in his career

Iā€™m unsure as to why Johns isnā€™t getting all the non Dickinson center minutes and just one of the small guards out there to compensate for lack of size a bit and be a bit more able to double on post ups if the idea is that Garza, Williams, Jackson-Davis and Cockburn types will be playing 5-10 minutes more than Dickinson and we need a post answer for those and the times Dickinson ends up in foil troubles against craftier vets.

We should be running out a Brooks/Smith-Brown/Williams-Wagner-Livers-Johns lineup for non Hunter mins.

Frustrated with that end by Brooks.

Johns is like a slobbery puppy out there bouncing around, breaking some stuff

For all the good and bad that implies

Thank T Will, BJJ and Hunter getting the energy going and d.

Agree on form. Although I think the spurts are more one spurt in the middle of last year. Itā€™s just crazy to me how far off some of his misses are (going back to last year).

Johns seems to be much better on the wings than the 5.

Thatā€™s fair. And yes the fact his misses are so far off are alarming. He also has been very hesitant with it this year

Itā€™s not just about Dickinson though. Playing Davis means giving Johnā€™s fewer minutes too.

Ah yes, the famous UNC tertiary green color.

Who made that decision lmao

This team feels like the roster of misfit toys sometimes. Thereā€™s like 5 wings that donā€™t really compliment eachother well at all, two are supposed to be stars and sometimes are but sometimes definitely arenā€™t, huge liabilities defensively at the two most important positions but thereā€™s potential answers at both in Smith and Dickinson. Iā€™m starting to think more often than not itā€™s going to be up to Juwan and staff to just push the right buttons, and those buttons could change every single night.

I give Juwan a ton of credit for finding the right lineup as quickly as he did tonight and sticking with it at the expense of more logical rotation patterns.

I also donā€™t get playing them 7 then 13. If Davis plays it should be 4/5 minutes a half, with those coming in the middle of two 8 minute stretches for Dickinson. Give the big boy a rest so he can play the second part of the first half semi rested

Wagner isnā€™t going anywhere if his play continues the way it is.

This is spot on. I said all offseason we have such a weird roster. Thereā€™s talent, but just a weird collection of players. And yes credit to Juwan for that lineup. If we get annoyed by weird lineups we have to give him credit when it works out

Well said buckets. A team full of role players and young guys. I still donā€™t view livers and Wagner as number 1s, would be great 2s.

Yeah Davis needs to leave at the U16

Good thing is that by starting Davis, Michigan gets the first jump ball or second half possession. Maybe Juwan is just innovating there.
