I’m sorry guys but I just watched the replay multiple times. Brooks set a blind side screen and from the TV angle (no others available due to no live replays) it does appear Teske ran through Wesson pushing both Wesson and Brooks down. Truth is Wesson was trying to block Teske ‘s move to open court on the way to basket and back out and got in his way but I can see where ref made that call that way. Yet another unfortunate situation for us but nothing incredibly egregious.
Agreed. He negotiated through a lot of missing pieces throughout the year. It’s a fair argument for those who say Beilein may have cobbled together a few more wins, but he was among the greatest in the game when he left. It’s been a pretty darn good rookie campaign for Juwan. Looking forward to see if he can build on it.
So I know these team has its deficiencies but I can’t remember another year with such bad luck. The amount of Difficult shots I’ve seen go in this year against us along with guys go unconscious has been unusual. Coupled with some ridiculous whistles and I genuinely feel bad for these guys. They have deserved more wins then is on the board.
When the bad Wesson’s 3 Ball banked in I just about puked.
Silver lining: If you’re at the tournament if your team wins the first game of the day, the rest of the day just rocks watching some hoop knowing U-M plays the next day. (However, I empathize with trying to negotiate work and the tourney.)
Losing, no matter what time of day, kicks rocks.
Agreed! That same feeling is even greater during the main Tournament as well. Absolutely love watching the rest of the games after an early W.
I’m going to have to agree to disagree at best. Teske is in motion, and that’s about it. To me it doesn’t even resemble a foul. What knocked Brooks down was Wesson DIVING FOR THE FLOOR. People are allowed to move on a basketball court. Standing in someone’s way and falling down at the first sign of motion is a dive. Not a foul.
I’ll go back and look. I know the sequence in terms of our offense was Franz drives and loses the ball, throwing it out of bounds, Teske scores on our next position from the paint - a straight on hook that bounces gently off the rim and in, and then the next possession that happens.
I didn’t say I agreed with the call. I just said I can see why the ref thinks it may have been a foul-therefore not egregious. I would have liked to have seen the baseline angle he had though.
You’re forcing me to have to FF’d through this damn game - I was about to delete it! Watching it again in a second.
Just watched it in real time - there’s just nothing there. It’s a normal basketball play - Wesson just puts himself in the way and dives down as soon as Teske starts to move. It seems I get angrier every time I watch this stupid call. I think it’s horrific.
Yeah, watched again and just no. It’s a simple basketball play. Wesson is engaged the entire time. He didn’t get run into, he’s shuffling along with Teske and dives to the floor. It’s horrific.
I’ve watched it in real time and slo mo again. Deleting it now. Wesson runs into Brooks. It should be a foul on him if it’s a foul on anyone. Stand by my initial assertion, it’s one of the most ridiculous calls I’ve ever seen. It’s garbage.
6:14 2nd half
Yeah that was an obvious flop and the ref fell for it. That said, what was Teske even doing there just mushing into Wesson? No conviction in that action.
Yes, sorry. Was just coming to post that. 66-64, I think - or 56-54? Probably the latter. Teske scores in the paint and then CJ Walker hits a jumper and then that.
“That said, what was Teske even doing there just mushing into Wesson? No conviction in that action.”
But it was just nothing. It was the start of the basketball play. Wesson is engaged the whole time. My God, if he had actually done a hard cut they would have cancelled the game and ordered our team to evacuate the state.
I think the play to get more mad about is the Davis “offensive foul.” Let’s just cancel post ups all around if the very first contact results in a flop and offensively foul like that.
I don’t know what Davis is supposed to do there.
I at least saw both sides on that one. I thought it was a bad call - I thought the Teske call was astounding. I honestly find it astounding. It’s a shockingly bad call imo. To the point of the game being rigged.
Michigan is just a flawed offensive team, we’re not going to make a huge run because of it. X is tremendous but he can’t shoot the ball and having a PG that can shoot the ball in March is almost a necessity. Eli is also limited offensively in terms of finishing. Franz is great and Isaiah is a great shooter but struggles to create for himself. Teske just isn’t where he needs to be offensively either.
The missed wide open threes are always frustrating especially because It feels like teams we play against hit all their open threes. We’re not a good jump shooting team and therefore need to stop taking so many jump shots. I do agree with the “keep shooting” it strategy but there is a reason the opponent is leaving you open to begin with.
Our defense has me concerned, I thought Wisconsin was an anomaly bc Brooks was sidelined, but tonight OSU shot 21 threes and made 11. That’s not a good thing for a team whose defense is centered around limiting 3 point attempts.
Teske is terrible at defending threes, he always leaves his hands down, and some of them are well contested and you just have to tip ur cap. But it seems like we’re so unlucky in terms of opponents making tough shots. Also seems like a player is always going to go off against us regardless of the looks they’re getting. Livers also clearly isn’t 100% he’s moving way to slow laterally and getting beat off the dribble every time.
Bottom line is this roster doesn’t have a lot of talent and Juwan has done a great job. Obviously there has been questionable decision making especially with substitutions. I think Michigan goes as the 3pt shot goes. We take a lot of them it’s just about if we can make at least 35% of them. We don’t have that guy who can go get a bucket that is a luxury to have but we have multiple guys capable of hitting open 3’s, it just hasn’t happened so far for us. Tough not to be mad and disappointed, especially when we know we’re better then this, but let’s remember the expectations we had coming into the season.
We’re a flawed shooting team. Our offense is fine I would say.
X is a very big plus in terms of three point shooting, so I wouldn’t even reference him. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but his ability to generate/facilitate threes massively outweighs his inability to shoot threes (and he is shooting at a good percentage anyway). Our proficiency from three is going to decline next year without X (all else equal), and that’s a scary thought given that our shooting is already not very good.
I agree X is a much improved 3 point shooter however, he’s not a guy whose a real threat from 3. Most of if not all of his attempts are wide open catch and shoot 3’s. He’s not someone who you’re circling on the scouting report as a lethal shooter. If X had the ability to shoot off the dribble it would be so valuable to this offense. I think Juwan runs great stuff but in terms of individual talent our players our flawed offensively.
Well that wasn’t really the point. X can be a 25% three point shooter, and it would still be beneficial for our three point shooting if he was on the court, and it’s because of his ability to generate threes for others. A large amount of our three point looks come from him doing something to make it happen; I can’t even begin to imagine how poor of a three point shooting team without X on the court.
Of course, you are right that it would be very valuable if he could shoot off the dribble. But he is the only reason our offense is half decent, and the reason we get so many open looks from three.
I’m talking strictly percentages, X can generate a lot of open looks but he’s not the one deciding if it’s going in or not. It’s just our inability to make open threes.
I popped in at this point to see some post-game recap and this is one of the first posts I saw and couldn’t agree more. Absolutely baffling that the league assigns 2 of the refs that oversaw the first debacle.
And for all the debate about the legitimacy of that call, I say “freedom of movement” must be out the window. Teske can’t go up to set a screen without Wesson mauling him and then he just fall over. Szelc fell for it because of the home environment and because he is a shitty ref. Wesson is impossible to officiate because of that shit he pulls. They even have the flop warning they can give and they don’t.
Do we win the game if that call isn’t made? No idea…probably not. But the momentum and swings of the game were moving it towards an exciting finish and to take Teske off the court at that point was just a killer.
