Game 16: Rutgers at Michigan Open Thread

Is Isaiah sometimes a little late on his closeouts? Or does he end up covering for other people? Seems like I seem him getting caught once or twice a game. Maybe that’s just all in a day’s work?

We all think Liddell is just too big for Franz? I tend to think so myself, but I do recall Howard putting Franz on (an admittedly much less burly) Nance in part because of Franz’s decision making in ball screen defense. Maybe those aren’t the primary actions OSU looks to to get Liddell involved though? I’m not sure. Will be interesting to read Dylan’s take coming up here.

Liddell is a lot stronger than Franz, but Franz has a lot of length that maybe could bother him. Those long arms are pesky

Definitely don’t think I said that? Have I said anything about Liddell?

Well damn, if anything you said the opposite and I was misremembering or attributing someone else’s view to you. Should’ve double checked. My apologies, will edit that out to be not completely incorrect.

Edit: Or delete entirely

Personally I think Franz could matchup on Liddell if necessary, I just thing he’s a much more natural matchup for Sueing. Despite being an elite, switchable defender Franz is still more perimeter oriented, which Sueing is as well as an offensive player. Sueing basically acts like a defacto PG at points, so I definitely think it’d be nice to have Franz matched up with him there. Similarly I think if you put Franz on Liddell, there would be both a size advantage for Liddell on Franz and more importantly I don’t think Livers would have much success guarding Sueing, so that gives two potential problem spots.

I think another benefit to Franz on Sueing is Sueing has a lower usage (20.4% in conference play and he’s had more games below 20% than above in conference play) and isn’t a perimeter shooter. So that would let Franz fall back into that ultra helper/Free Safety type role he’s been playing so well, which I think ends up being a big net positive for everyone else on defense.

I think this is in reference to something you said comparing how OSU and Wisconsin use their bigs.

Does anyone know anything about Towns?

Asked Chris Holtmann about Seth Towns: "I think he’s gonna be OK. We’ll know more in a day, but he’s banged up. He and Kyle. We’ll see. Kyle will be, I think he’ll be OK but he’s going to need some time off." #Buckeyes host Michigan on Sunday.

I love how the Rutgers open thread morphed into the unofficial OSU preview thread! :joy:

Also, is it true that Kyle Young rarely practices? I’ve heard that on a few OSU broadcasts this season.
