Game 12: Michigan at UCF Open Thread

Did we not have a decided advantage on the offensive glass tonight?

8 is probably a fair over/under, but that’s a couple of breaks from 6 or 10 or whatever else. There’s just a lot of hoops left.

Jones has improved and played pretty good tonight. 3 assists and two TOs, 7 rebounds. And if guys had made open shots that TO ratio would be higher.

This team was up 12 with 16 minutes left in this game.

I think what I’m trying to say is I would love to see Juwan become the red Auerbach of Michigan. Just stay forever. Players love him. I think he’s created a huge buzz.
It wasn’t long ago this thread would blow
Up with ā€œBelien can’t get 5 starsā€ and he showed us that old guys could
Get better and develop
Juwan comes in and gets a bunch of 5 stars and they don’t live up and he takes criticism.
You can’t have both normally and when you do you’ll run into a Natty

Maybe I’m just too pessimistic right now but I’m not even sure I see this team beating any top tier big ten teams. Their flaws don’t translate into areas where certain matchups are better for Michigan than others and they are not a good shooting team so the possibility of riding a hot shooting game to a win over a better team is not likely. This team has basically been blown out against every decent team they’ve played this year except Seton Hall and SD State.

Yeah just trying to be a little positive, but its a struggle! Just crossing my fingers and hoping.

Yeah, people lumping in Jones right now as a ā€œmissā€ didn’t see that he was our best player tonight and couldn’t be taken off the floor because of Frankie’s disaster of a 1st half. He has made some strides to being what we were hoping.

The bigger issue is Houstan being Kam Chatman like noted above. And I like Kobe (or Zeb) getting some run for him because outside of Kobe there is not another realistic option to take his minutes.

Jones starting to look like the real deal

Yeah definitely thought Devante was the best player on the court for Michigan at times tonight. And this was against a real opponent, but he made shots when he needed to and minimized mistakes.

Jones has been so much better the last couple games. Still wish he would speed up but he’s becoming a big factor for sure

Hunter and Caleb though :chart_with_downwards_trend:

I think the Chatman comps for Houstan are a little harsh. 10 and 4 a game playing 30ish minutes on 40% from the field and 36% from three (4+ attempts) is way way way ahead of where freshman Chatman was. I agree we need Houstan to be an alpha a la Iggy to have any hope, but I don’t really blame him for just being fine instead of fantastic.

I don’t think we’re being that hard or pessimistic. They look lost, playing terrible rotations, not doing the little things heading into big ten play. To say they are an NIT team is fair at this point

This is what scares me with asking the very fair question of how much ā€œtimeā€ we have. All 3 of MSU/Purdue/ILL are looking to tear us apart. And given our lack of identity and ā€œdogā€ we seem to be missing it could get really ugly.

We have to remember this is still a very young team and given time I think we can put some pieces together. But having those 3 staring at us when we need time is not going to help.

Scary that we got 35 points and 7 assists from Brooks/Jones and still had tonight’s outcome.

Hate to say it, but Hunter has underwhelmed too. Key stretch when things were starting to get away from us and he misses a bunny (like he did against Minn) then flops on the other end. All-Americans don’t do that.

Hard for Hunter to play well with the offensive flow and spacing we have. Little creators and not great shooting.

More collection of parts than team still. Getting fairly deep into the season to see this disconnect, this dysfunction. Tough to see because we’ve become accustomed to the beauty of the inverse. This is where a coaching staff has its chance to shine. Or fail.

I was at the game. The lack of offense translated to defense in the second half. What was working in the first half did not work in the second half. Credit UCF they shot at a VERY high level in the second half. And Michigans offense just sputtered. Their rotations in the first half really complemented each other while the last 15 minutes they looked slow, gased and not playing together at a high level
