Game 1: Appalachian State at Michigan Open Thread

Was just going through this thread and saw lots of panic and “ it’s going to be a long year”. Let’s all not forget they were up 30 at one point.

They didn’t score for almost ten minutes and must have had 8 turnovers in that stretch ( maybe more) shot 1-6 from the line as well, yet still won by 8. I’m not trying to polish a turd here but if you told me the above I would have said we lost by ten minimum.

There will be some growing pains and ugly moments but I think there is talent clearly. I’m not expecting z to have too many games like this. I think eli, johns, and Colin will all contribute and come through. Once Franz gets back and if he can shoot well after the injury and ges in the swing of things I think we will be pleasantly surprised.

Missed the game, but looking forward to watching Brooks go off on the replay. Hopefully that’s something to build on.

I saw on both Detroit free press and GBW articles after the game talking about getting swept by MSU for the season, am I losing my mind or so we only have state once and it’s home for us this year?

Agree wholeheartedly. In fact, what I’m trying to say is that Juwan might have been able to stanch the bleeding earlier on.

Michigan played really well for 3 quarters. That last quarter had many teachable moments. It will be interesting to see how Coach Howard handles the next few practices. I think after watching these first 2 games one thing that stands out to me is Michigan, as a team, needs to learn what a good shot is and what a terrible shot is in this new offense. I am not taking too much away from the last part of this game tonight other than the team needs to remain focus for 40 mins! Go Blue!

I don’t believe in organized religion, but a rapture of these two teams would be hilarious right meow.

That one’s always gonna sting. The kid openly opined about how much playing time was important to him, then committed to a school that pretty obviously doesn’t seem likely to deliver. He also fit such a massive positional need for Michigan. I actually thought to check in on his stat line during that 27-3 run, thinking damn we need a wing scorer. Oh well

Going to have to get used to playing faster. Remains to be seen if this roster is suited to play up and down basketball.

Rough game for Simpson. Thought he tried way too many high risk passes and struggled to finish around the basket.

Love Livers shot. Problem is when tries to floor the ball, bad things happen.

Teske was incredible in the first half and then disappeared in the 2nd half. Not sure if he wore himself out in the first half or what.

I thought Castleton and Johns both had some good moments. Nunez shot the ball well but committed too may fouls. DeJulius looked poor on both ends of the court.

Story of the game was definitely Brooks. He played great. Nice to see him playing with confidence and decisiveness out there.

We definitely are missing Wagner. Don’t want to put too much on a young freshman but they have a major hole at the wing. DeJulius did nothing to earn extensive minutes but played the majority of the 2nd half because of limited options.

I know you were agreeing. I just piggybacked off your comment after reading back through the open thread and seeing some doom and gloom.

I think he wanted to let them play through it knowing there’s lots of inexperience out there. It might have caused us a heart attack but I think that was his thought process. Lose small battles to win the war. What better time then game one in a blow out? After seeing they weren’t responding/ righting the ship he should have hopped in quicker imo. Don’t want them to lose confidence/ let this carry over. Some fragile minds out there still.

Agreed on all fronts. The one thing I can’t figure out about brooks is why he can’t finish relatively open lay ups. He’s pretty crafty with those hesitation moves and gets open but then misses the finish.

I must have seen him use pretty much the same move ten times and it works every time but he’s 1-10 on the lay in. Either way, I like the kid and think he’s going to come through.

You talking about the floater? There was one where I think he only caught glass and it led to an easy putback.

The floater is a tough shot but it’s a great weapon for small guards if you can master it.

A win is a win. Nebraska would of love to win by 8 instead they lost at home by double digits.

No, later in the game when we were falling apart he went left them acted like he was pulling it back out and turned back on the guy and beat him to the rim. Then missed it point blank.

I’ve seen him beat guys with that move or other crafty takes at least 10 times over the last few years and he misses a relatively open lay in. Still love the guys potential and not harping on one bad miss but it’s always confused me.

Johns had a few moments but still see him as a guy that may never develop as he just does not look comfortable or fluid. Hope I am wrong.

Watched it on DVR.
Hopefully Eli’s confidence will remain when we go up against better teams.
Johns needs the game to slow down for him but you can see the potential compared to last year.
Teske being the offensive hub isn’t sustainable but it was fun to watch. He let the heat check break him.
Z will get his stuff right. We all know that.
Livers really needs to learn one dribble to get a shot vs trying to get to the hole. He will get stripped most times.

I was really wanting Juwan to hit a time out to settle them down. During that scoreless stretch they made a bunch of mental mistakes and looked like their shoulders were starting to droop.

Overall, there is a lot of good here but we’re going to have to figure out some offensive sets to get our guys comfortable when that drought comes on. Seems familiar to last year in that regard.

Yes re: Juwan. Hoping that Martelli and him went 1-on-1 postgame and talked about every choice Juwan made throughout that game

Agreed. Every time they showed Martelli I thought it had to be hard for him not to jump up and take over. Hopefully Juwan can and will tap into that wealth of knowledge on a regular basis.

Nebraska fans better prepare for many more … and worse.
