Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk

It was definitely a dodgy tieup call, but shouldn’t have mattered, if they could have executed an easy jump ball when Duren had a massive height advantage.

I wanted Duren to just slap it the other way and have Hardaway outrun his guy for it.

I don’t think there’s enough certainty over who these guys are to do that yet. Dealing picks makes somewhat more sense bc you’re taking production from the much farther future but I still think just letting age and health do the work is the best way forward.

Agree that they need to figure out how to play some hardball with these guys tho. None of them have proven they’re rookie max guys.

Rule is terrible. Should just be a retake of the free throw.

I don’t really think there is a good solution for this specific scenario other than don’t mess up the clock. It would have worked last night because Brunson would have purposely tried to miss again and led to the same result. But it’s not a one size fits all solution.

What about a scenario where the same thing happens and the player actually wanted to make the FT? He gets another chance to shoot the shot he just missed? Why? That’s insane. Imagine a tie game and the player misses the FT to take the lead, but then gets another chance due to the clock guy and makes it the next time. That’s a far more egregious result than making a team go the length of the court in 0.5 seconds. Both are bad, but it is slightly more equitable and there isn’t a great solution to this particular screw up.

A clock run off, because you’re right in a situation where the guy wants to make it, it’s really messed up

Refs take time off and put it on all the time on replay

They can probably figure it out :man_shrugging:

Refs’ discretion? It’s not hard to figure out by game situation. Whatever happened last night just cannot happen. That was actual insanity. We watched a game that was functionally over turn into a game where the trailing team could win on a buzzer beater.

LOL when is a rule written that says it is refs’ discretion? And who gets to decide whether the refs’ discretion is correct? Just luck of the draw that you get refs that are vibing with you on a given night?

So if Brunson wanted to make it, but missed, then refs can decide to give it to the Pistons, but if he wanted to miss then we will just re-do the FT? Do you have to ask the shooter before he attempts the shot whether he wants to make it or miss it?

And go back to my hypothetical where the game is tied and Brunson wants to make it but misses? What’s your solution? Give him another chance to win the game with another FT? Or do the exact thing that happened and give the Pistons the ball out of bounds with a chance to win? Or do you for some reason just say the game is over even though the Pistons never had a chance to grab a rebound and shoot it?

The reason that what happened last night can’t happen is because of the clock operator! Yes, it was a crazy situation, but there isn’t a rule that you can put in writing that will create a great solution.

I’m willing to listen to a solution, but I don’t think there is one. And it sure as heck isn’t let the refs do whatever they feel like in the moment

I mean in mlb it’s written like that all the time (take runner’s interference). Isn’t it easy to deduce 100 times out of 100 times what the guy’s intention is? I’m not some ref worshipper, but I feel like I can trust them to get this right every time. If a team is down 1, of course he’s trying to make it. Down 2 with one free throw and no time on the clock, it’s an obvious intentional miss. I don’t know, we’re talking about a very specific situation where the clock would ever go off for end of game. I feel like I can trust the refs to clear the very low bar of basic common sense.

So I’ve never been one to overly bemoan the intensity of defense in the NBA as has become pretty common.

That said, anyone think the pendulum has swung a bit too far this playoffs in terms of physicality?

I absolutely could be in the minority on this. People seemingly tend to prefer more contact allowed on defense.

Personally I don’t view freedom of movement as a bad thing. Feels like almost every team, particularly the more disadvantaged, are just fouling every possession knowing it all can’t get called.

I’ll admIt I did t quite get the theory of the case with acquiring Julius Randle but in retrospect, having another guy who is a triple threat and not just another possession finisher sort of makes this offense go

He’s also done pretty well when switched on Luka or Lebron

Sorta feel like starting their 8th best player (Conley) is a mistake as much as I liked him at his prime

Nico, while he still has a job, is in a hotel room somewhere yelling SEE?! watching Luka get stonewalled by Julius Randle
