Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk (Part 1)

Carsen Edwards is being brought in.

Have to decide on his 4th year in October, but still 2 more years until RFA

Right but he’s an RFA if they don’t extend the year prior right

Yeah. I’m guessing he’s not gonna be the caliber of player that gets extended pre-RFA?

He’s a good fit considering the Pistons have large point guards

The extension would be like $17 mil I think

So I’d doubt it

I doubt Hayes would be extended early. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Pistons kick the tires on Jalen Brunson in the off-season or ended up getting a guard in the draft. They seem to be in “let’s see how things shake out” mode.

Isiah, early in his career, could put up some huge numbers. But Daly got him to buy into the team concept and sacrifice his stats a bit.

There also was Grant Hill. Everyone forgets it now but he was really, really good for the Pistons, like top 5-10 in the league. He just didn’t have much help. Losing Allan Houston to free agency was rough.

They were fortunate to unload him right when he got injured (and get Ben Wallace in the deal!) but he was a great player before then.

From what I recall, both Ben and Chucky were going to be targets in FA, regardless of what Hill did.

Hill was phenomenal in Detroit, and had some good teammates: Alan Houston, T-Mills, Ratliff (then Stackhouse), Thorpe, plus Dumars throughout, as well as role players like JYD and Lindsey, but didn’t quite go next-level when playoff time came. The teams weren’t good enough to be contenders, but Hill should’ve been good enough to lead one of those teams into the 2nd round. The two series against Atlanta hurt, especially '97. The Hawks weren’t that special. They were kind of the Poor Man’s version of the '04 Pistons. No superstars, but a really cohesive unit, and a great defensive center.

In '97, the Pistons had an 8 point lead against the Hawks, going into the 4th quarter in the deciding Game 5. Hill went 0-5 in the 4th, and Atlanta won by 5. The failures don’t fall completely on Grant, but he was the face of the team and arguably a top-5 player in the league. Top-10 for sure. Could’ve been an all-timer, if he’d stayed healthy.

This is true. The one thing about Hill was he didn’t seem to have that alpha dog mentality when we needed him to take over in the 4th quarter.

Brunson is who I want them to go after hard.

I wasn’t following the NBA very closely then, but I don’t remember Grant being that elite. I remember him being very good, but a guy who needed another star. In some ways I think of him as a potential comp for Franz.

He was that good. Just a little notch below MVP candidate. Until the 4th quarter of an elimination game sadly…

Are you guys talking about Grant…Hill?

Or Jeramy Grant?

People were saying Grant Hill had the potential to be the greatest of all time, not just elite. His explosiveness and size was otherworldly.

Here are some highlights. The sequence vs. Zo is worth the whole thing, even though he’s in the teal.

Here are a bunch of highlights. And, fittingly, he scores 5 buckets in a row (starting around the 3:45 mark) are against Jerami Grant’s daddy. The guy he scores on right after that looks pretty familiar too…

People forget how absurdly good Grant Hill was before his injuries have robbed him of his athleticism. He was super explosive and a force to be reckoned with

Wow - I wasn’t watching much of the Pistons at that time. Those are amazing. He just keeps going up and up and up when he jumps. Thanks for highlighting the Zo back to back – epic!

His first bucket ever with the Pistons (though, in preseason) was an alley-oop dunk, I think on their first possession. Hill was super springy. He would’ve needed to work on the 3-pointer in this era but he was special.

Franz has some moves, and a decent handle, but Hill is not a good comp for him. I’m trying to think who from the 90’s might be. Maybe a Toni Kukoc, with defense? Derrick McKey, with more scoring ability?

Franz’s archetype is Pippin, right? A defense (team and man to man) first wing who also happens to average 20-23ppg. Very unlikely that Frank is one of the 100 best to ever play, but that’s the idea.

Andrei Kirikenko (Boo Russia — obligatory) is right continent of origin and closer in size but AK was maybe a bit more of a scorer?
