Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk (Part 1)

He shot 40% last year. Plays good defense. Not a great rebounder but that’s not a problem with Duren there. He adapted well to Cade and Saddiq Bey needing the ball more so it’s not like he’s a selfish player. Just wanted to show he had more to his game.

i think he’s saying “I’m enamored with Grant Williams. I am not enamored with Jerami Grant.” those two names make for a confusing post

Ah ok yes you’re right. that is confusing

lo, whoops

yes this is what I was saying.

I am not enamored with Grant williams.
I am not enamored with Jerami grant.
I am not enamored with Cam johnson.
I am not enamored with Harrison Barnes but if he’s cheaper and you can get him for two or three years, I’m in.

I’m fine with Grant Williams.
I’m fine with Harrison Barnes.
I’m skeptical on Cam Johnson.

I bring this up every once in a while…but what if we decide to just keep rolling with Bogey? Like, I am completely fine with that! I am definitely an NBA casual…I just think his skillset aligns nicely with this seasons roster.

And if he’s traded, I don’t want it to be for picks.

I am having a hard time squaring the idea of a Hendricks guy being out on Grant Williams

He’s a switchable 4 that knocks down catch and shoot 3s

If Bogie weren’t 10+ years older than their theoretical core he’d be great.

Weird that the Jazz took on Collins with Lauri and Taylor Hendricks there already.

I predict the Pistons will throw a big offer at Cam and then settle for 1 or 2 deals on cheaper, veteran pieces if the Nets match. I kind of wonder if they’d match even if the Pistons did 4 years, $120 million or something crazy like that.

I get Bogie’s age makes him a stopgap. And if we land one of the aforementioned guys (Grant/Grant/Cam) he becomes more expendable. I worry that the theoretical core is only around for 2-3 more years together…so might as well maximize each year with a good player. Basically add cheaper shooters and roll with Bogie this year. And then have the same discussion on where to spend the cap money a year from now when we better know what Cade is.

I think this is pretty sensible. Bogie is good enough and contract is decent value and importantly not too long.

Any member of the core who isn’t here after three years is because the Pistons chose not to match their extension desire, which would probably only happen if they weren’t very good, so that’s a problem that probably takes care of itself either way

To use Cade as an example

If the Pistons continue to pick up his options (nearly a certainty - they picked up all of Killian’s), don’t renounce him after that, and match his offers, they keep him

If they don’t do those things they basically don’t think he’s a star, in which case the core isn’t very good

Cade, Ivey, Ausar, Duren and Sasser will be here barring a trade.
Any major free agents signings will likely be 3 years unless they pull a JJ Redick.
Stewart, Wiseman and Hayes would have to be extended.

I guess I am too casual of an NBA fan to know how easy or difficult it is to keep a core intact and actually let them develop. I think about OKC, and how they built their team a decade ago… And I fear we will experience the same. (Aka drafted three studs, but it was short lived).

But maybe that’s not how things work anymore :man_shrugging:t2: Definitely feel free to dumb it down for me!

Early starting line up projection

PG: Cade
SG: Jaden
SF: Ausar
PF: Bogey
C: Duren

Bench: Beef Stew, Sasser, Burks, Livers, Bagley, Wiseman.

Looking at FA, the biggest need is wing players who can shoot. I know that Cam Johnson is their #1 target, but the expectation is his contract will get matched. I mentioned Torrey Craig as the fallback option.

I can see minutes breakdown like this

PG: Cade 32/Jaden 10/Sasser 8
SG: Jaden 22/Burk 16/Ausar 10
SF: Ausar 18/Bogey 16/FA 14
PF: Bogey 16/Beef Stew 22/FA or Livers 10
C: Duren 30/Beef Stew 8/Bagley or Wiseman remaining minutes

Ideally, Bagley and Wiseman should not see time at PF. Monty wants spacing so having a big next to Ausar would really cramp the spacing. Killian should not see any PT unless it’s a rest day or blowout or foul trouble at G aka 12th man on the bench. Correct me if I’m wrong or you can call me dumb for this breakdown.

I am maybe just showing my Michigan bias…but is Livers really just a 10mpg guy? Feels weird to say Pistons need a 3/4 who can shoot and then project Livers to 10mpg. I get that he’s injury prone and has limited upside…but he’s been playing 20mpg and shooting well and defending adequately.

There is no set answer for keeping a core intact for a team like Detroit. It’s not a desirable market compared to the likes of LA and Miami, so you need to throw money at people if they don’t have some strong desire to spend their career there. A guy like Jaden Ivey has ties to the city and seemed like he genuinely wanted to be here, so paying him what he deserves can likely keep him around. For anyone else, it’s all a guess. The more likely a team is to win a title, such as Milwaukee, the more likely guys will also want to stay.

I’m sure Cade would stick around if you give him the max deal and it’s more than other teams can offer, but with the new CBA you’re going to be limited in how many max deals you can do, so when you’re get to the point of signing some of these other guys and don’t plan to offer the max, there’s a chance they’d rather take the same money elsewhere.

Livers’ minutes will be dependent on who else they sign. The 3 could be a mix of Ausar, Bogie, and Livers as the roster stands now (not signing Diallo), and the 4 could be a mix of Bogie, Stewart, Bagley, Livers, and maybe even Wiseman. That’s a lot of guys for 2 spots.
