More likely that Hatch becomes a preferred walk-on than a medical. He can afford the tuition, and he could keep playing. This assumes that Beilein is thinking about using that scholarship.
Im not sure that’s possible. At least it isn’t in football.
IIRC, Kentucky did this a few years ago to make room.

It’s possible. Stainbrook from Xavier gave up his scholarship so his brother could have one.
It’s even possible in football. What’s not possible is for a football player to be on scholarship for another sport.

With a 30 ACT and 4.1 gpa he easily could be the smartest kid book wise on the Michigan basketball team. JMO was pretty smart and he really understood that offense. Let’s hope book smarts translates to awesome on ball screens. I just hope some day he’s as chiseled as JMO. He was a real Pud when he committed.
I like this kid, great attitude, hard worker, very intelligent, in addition to being big. Regardless of the criticisms of jumping too early on him, or the redundancy/roster imbalance his commitment makes, it seems like he is a solid pickup that has a lot to offer.
Yes, this is a great read. A week or so ago I wrote on one of these threads how it bothers me that “fans” can be so critical of our kids. I said I hope kids and their parents don’t read this stuff. One of my long time favorite posters, Sane1, said he knows that they do. Well they do. Austin sounds like an outstanding young man. He’s a 4.1 taking AP classes. He works extremely hard at his craft. I hope Austin has a GREAT Michigan Basketball career as much for him and his community as I do for our program. Austin, if you’re reading this, from an old basketball coach, congratulations! I wish you the greatest of success in all that you do! Go Blue!
I don’t know why any parent or player would read a message board. Even in the best of circumstances you will get at least 20% negative comments. That is just the nature of the beast.

You really don’t know why a parent or player would read a message board? Really?
It’s human nature to be curious as to what people are saying about you. Once you’ve been in the spotlight for a while, that curiosity subsides a bit. But when you are a junior in high school and aren’t accustomed to such publicity, you want to read what people think about you–especially the fans of the school to which you just committed. You read, hoping to see people celebrating your commitment and looking excitedly towards the future. And proud parents no doubt want to relish this time, as well. They aren’t reading with the expectation that their son will be torn to shreds.
These are fan forums, so people should absolutely be able to discuss a prospect or player’s strengths and weaknesses and make projections and critiques. Some of the posts go way overboard and do not add anything to the discussion. Saying someone “is crappy at basketball” is worthless and just mean-spirited.

That’s all fine if they want to go on boards. I just wouldn’t take any of it to heart if I were them. It’s an anonymous board with one of the primary purposes being to allow fans to vent and be critical. I’m not defending mean spirited posts of course. Just saying they they will need to have thick skins if going on boards. If it were me, I wouldn’t even bother.

I would not put allowing fans to vent as a primary purpose of a board for hardcore UM Hoops fans. Here’s a quote from Dylan’s pinned post at the top of the board:
“Please just think before you post. Be courteous and reasonable and realize that sometimes its okay to agree to disagree. Don’t attack people personally, hurl insults, etc.”
People use the board to vent, but that seems to me more of an unfortunate byproduct, not a primary purpose. Discussions about basketball, disagreements about recruiting, sure. Venting, no.
I go back and forth on this. I mean, mean-spirited posts are never justified but expressing disappointment at a particular recruiting choice shouldn’t be verboten just because there’s an outside chance the recruit and/or his/her family would scan the boards (a masochistic act if there ever was one). That said, I’m totally OK with Davis and look forward to seeing what he can contribute.
That said, I was known to be a bit hard on Matt Vogrich (not to mention poor Blake M) back in the day.

There is a difference between the way we may want things to go and the way they actually do go. Of course people vent on these boards, particularly during a game.
My point is that this is the nature of the beast and players and their families should be prepared to face that reality if they venture on anonymous message boards.

If a high school kid committing to Michigan makes you so upset that you need to “vent” on a message board through non-constructive personal attacks, you need to reevaluate your priorities.

give me a break. That is not what I’m saying at all, but nice try.
Austin Davis is now ranked as the # 82 player in the country, the #10 center, and #3 in Michigan on 247. I am not sure if this is based on a more recent evaluation or a customary “power conference school bump,” but congrats to Austin regardless. Teske is ranked as the #16 center, for comparison.
EDIT: He is now comfortably in the 4-star range on 247.
Looks like Beilein got a guy on the rise. If the rumors are true of him reclassifying to 2017 we might have a steal by the time that comes.
For all the head scratching and anger at this commitment by the time 2017 arrives we could all be pleasantly happy with this move.
I honestly would be perfectly OK with the pickup if he does prep and come in with the 2017 class. I don’t think my questions are as much related to talent so much as room on the roster.
I’ll be honest,my questions were, and still are, based on both. I think everyone would concur that if Davis remains a 16 recruit, it’s a head scratcher based on needs. From a talent standpoint, if we’re being totally blunt, It’s not as if Davis’ film excites all that much. Not necessarily Davis centric, but really more of a personnel thought in general…but honestly, how many slow/stiff kids can you have on a roster. At some point I’d really like to upgrade the athletic pedigree. And hopefully we will get some good news on that front within the next few weeks.
