I’ll have more on my site in regard to Hardy VERY soon. Don’t know if I will post that here, as it isn’t technically UM related, and don’t want to clutter the board with non-relevant information.
Gotcha. I’ll check it out.
Thanks. Poole is clearly a better and more consistent passer plus with his elite shooting/quick release, he could be a big time scorer here. I think it may have been discussed on this board, but I could definitely see him in a Stauskas role.
Cain looks like a good prospect. He’s clearly got the athleticism and looks to have good motor. My areas of concern for him are the perimeter skills: shooting, ball-handling, and passing. This isn’t to say that he doesn’t have them, just that I haven’t seen them on display much in the highlights reels. Of course it’s hard to make full assessments from highlights, and he has other guards on his team. But when a big fan of his says he has the “capability of shooting 35% from 3 in college,” that suggests to me his shot needs work. His stroke looks okay to me, so I suspect JB thinks there’s enough there to make him at least a good shooter. I’d also like to see him handle in traffic more, especially in a half-court setting. Some impressive clips, though, to be sure.
What is the competition like at the Storm Classic?
Can Cain defend?
I don’t think there is any question that he can shoot. I’ve posted many clips here of Cain knocking down 3s consistently. Again, not Nik Stauskas but a better shooter than Ibi for context. Same thing with the handle, I’ve posted clips of Jamal handling in PnR situations and he’s looked good. Not Trey with the handle, but better than Ibi, THJ, Zak at the same age. I’d say above average.
Based on what Ive seen in terms of motor, lateral agility, verticality I’d say average/above average. The hedge recovery and deflection was pretty impressive IMO.
Of course caveats apply based on position, Cain certainly cannot defend a B10 4 based on lack of strength.
How would he compare to a guy like Troy Williams at IU?
Like I said, the clips may be out there, and I haven’t watched them all. I don’t believe Cain is a better shooter than Watson though.
I’m with Dylan that AAU stats probably aren’t the best metric, but Ibi shot 32.4% from deep last year with All Ohio on the EYBL circuit. The sample size is 102 shots, which is pretty sizeable. I’m curious to see what Jamal shoots this year on the circuit. Personally, I believe Jamal is as good, and most likely a better shooter than Ibi.
You say you haven’t seen Jamal as a shooter, understandable. Here you go
Really difficult to assess without seeing HS footage of Troy. My gut tells me Jamal was probably more skilled, but again, not an informed opinion.
He gets into his shooting motion really fast. Beilein’s got to love that!
Really hope he comes. He and Poole would be a hell of a start to the class. Two potential difference makers
X, Poole, Cain, Young, Teske
Yep, I can get excited about that
Thanks for the clip. I like his shot, looks like maybe there’s a bit of a hitch, but overall it looks pretty good to me. I still think Ibi looks like a better shooter though. For instance, in the clip below (which I think is a year old so would be just after Ibi’s junior year), you see more shooting off the dribble or with a taller guys closing out on him. Anyway, like I said, it’s good to see those clips of Cain.
Kids shot looks good. Improved a lot over his last High school summer. Should be able to contribute right away. Should have the Irvin freshman year role, cone in and knock down open shots. Could potentially carve out a nice role for himself b
Interview with Kyle Young, looks to be really high on our board
Hey MattD, does Bacari getting the Detroit job affect Jamal’s recruitment much?
Also what do you guys want to see done with a 4th ship in 2017? Say we get a class or something similar to Poole, Young and Cain. Another ball handler or wing? Surely not a big man, think we end up taking 4.
Who were the other high profile recruits at the event Cain just took home MVP honors at?
Terry Armstrong (1Nation), Lamar Norman (1Nation), Darius Bazley (King James), Justin Ahrens (King James), Mark ‘Rocket’ Watts (REACH), Romeo Weems (The Family), Davion Williams (MI Mustangs)
