Well so much for Murray then. He was probably never coming anyway. Langford pretty much becomes a must get. Its hard to see us pulling Winston or Towns at this point. We don’t win many recruiting battles against MSU or OSU for guys that both programs really want. Hope I am wrong, but 2016 is not looking promising.
You were saying? Still feeling good about 2016 recruiting after the Davis commit? Face it, we aren’t going to land any of our top targets and so the staff is moving on.
I read that article and I am now depressed. Seems JB is getting outworked again. The best players want to play with the other best players. Izzo is apparently selling that hard and kids are buying it. I wonder what JB's pitch to this kid is? And how in the world is Izzo out working JB for this kid?
“My recruitment has been going good,” he said. “Michigan State has been on me the most. Michigan, Louisville, and Kentucky have been on me hard too, but I’m open to everybody right now.”
Many believe Michigan State is the team to beat for Bridges, who wouldn’t let the cat out the bag on what school leads for him, but the Spartans are certainly making it known that Bridges is wanted in East Lansing.
“State has just been telling me that I would really fit it there,” said Bridges. “East Lansing is only 45 minutes away from my house, and they want me to be surrounded by people I know, like Caleb Swanigan,Deyonta Davis, and Cassius Winston, probably.”
I mean, it really depends on priority. Coaches have a finite amount of time to spend recruiting. If Bridges if Izzo’s #1 target at wing, then it makes sense that they’re recruiting him the hardest. I’m assuming that Brown, Langford, and Battle are higher priority for us right now than Bridges.
Besides, who is recruiting harder is all perception. For all we know, JB is recruiting at the same level as Izzo and Bridges just likes Izzo more. Or MSU was in on him a month or two earlier than we were. Or he grew up a fan of MSU (most young bball fans in MI did because we were trash for a decade when the internet and cable were booming). Who knows. I think it’s futile to get worked up about vague proclamations by teenagers. He said we’re on him hard, which is a good thing. Now our coaches know that he thinks MSU is after him harder (assuming they pay attention to interviews from recruiting websites, and I assume they do because they have support staff that track stuff like this, I’m sure). Gotta ramp it up from here.
Here’s what I wrote on Miles this time last year when all he had was a providence offer:
Miles Bridges Day 1:
I wasn’t told to look at this kid, but I’m going to make a few comments. Most College ready player on The Family. Did it all. Best rebounder on the floor. Composed. Built like a brick house. High Motor. This kid will play in the B1G somewhere, if not, a mid major will pick up an All Conference player
Miles Bridges Day 2:
Had a nice alley hoop dunk. Nice pass from Davis. Bridges also had a monster dunk driving baseline. Cocked it back, a kid came up to challenge him and fouled him. Davis just missed the dunk, but it got everyone to stand up. It was big time. He was the best player on the floor. Most college ready again. I have to imagine his offer sheet will only improve from this point on. He can play in the B1G by the time he graduates. He’s definitely a slasher though. Doesn’t have the greatest handle or jump shot.
This kid is on my wish list. Michigan needs this type of player on the roster.

If you guys want “good news” on Winston, I’m a UD Jesuit alum, and I know that Winston constantly wears Michigan clothes around, and never MSU stuff. So yeah, idk if that means anything, but ¯\(ツ)/¯
Would love to get him. Turned into a solid set shooter. Big time athleticism. Great rebounder and finisher. Sounds like Msu is the leader in the clubhouse tho

There’s definitely some truth to what you say.
I’m done making excuses for what’s taking place on the recruiting trail though. It’s getting sad. What’s making it worse is MSU is on fire right now.

I’m always under the presumption that MSU is going to have very good players. They’ve had very good players for the better part of the last 20 years. And are they really on fire? They got Swanigan (huge huge pull) and are the supposed favorites for Winston and Bridges. If we get a commit from Brown or Langford, does that make us on fire too? I don’t really think so.
I know it’s hard to combat the feeling right now, but in basketball - particularly in college - things can change very quickly, for good or bad. If Brown shocks everyone and commits to us, we’ve got a team that can go to the Final Four and sweep MSU. Then things are starting to look real great for Michigan and JB again. Could give us momentum in the Langford recruitment and we snag a PG too and we’re back to cruise control in consistently having very good teams. The opposite could happen to. I try to be patient and I completely understand the criticisms against JB and Co re: recruiting. I’ve made some myself. But I’m not ready to bury us.
We have to let the 16 recruiting cycle play out before we can really chastise JB. If we fail to land an upper tier creator, I think it’s fair game to really criticize him in a more aggressive manner. Most people just look at the on court results and let that determine their views on recruiting, which isn’t the appropriate measure in my view. Recruiting cycles impact 1-3 years in the future, which is why 16 is imperative to say the least. If Caris comes back, we will be a tourney team this year, but if we fail to land an upper tier creator for 16 I think we will really see the negative impact of poor recruiting manifest itself.
Come on. Anyone remotely familiar with Bridges’ recruitment knows he likes MSU and hasn’t shown much interest in Michigan. You don’t allocate a ton of your time to him.
Izzo had a couple of lean years before this year. Swanigan was a surprise to Izzo, his commitment was the result of MSU’s FF run. He got Davis’ commitment before he blew up. Re: outworked, Beilein has been to all of the same AAU events as other coaches. He or his staff keep in contact with recruits, use social media, etc. If you assume that we lost a given recruit because we were “outworked,” there is no way to know that. Most often, we lose a kid to Duke or Kentucky. They can come in late and flip kids - just like we’ve done in football. Some kids are just out of reach for other reasons. Also, there’s no getting around that this past season hurt our '16 recruiting mojo. I think the staff needs to evaluate how they are going about things, but I don’t know enough to pin point the reason(s) for lack '16 commitments.
Actually, as opposed to letting the cycle play out, we need to actually see how good the current players are. Again, that’s the issue I have with your player analysis - you see one clip of film, or one season (or in the case of a guy like Wilson, about 3 games) and you draw iron-clad conclusions based on that.
Forget the substantial improvement shown by many of our players (Sims, Morris, Morgan, LeVert come readily to mind), look at an MSU - Nix, Trice, Payne (sure, a 5 star recruit, but so was Chatman) - all those guys showed HUGE improvement during their careers. The problem is that based on 2013, when our guys don’t set the world on fire in year one or two, we assume they won’t be any good. Just let it play out. If you’re right, you’re right.
