We can’t say Dawkins was the worst defender on the team because his terrible defense kept him off the court?

That makes absolutely no sense.

Scenario A: Beilein benches Dawkins because Dawkins is terrible on defense.

“We can’t call Dawkins our worst defender because he didn’t play enough minutes.”

Scenario B: Beilein plays Dawkins enough minutes to be considered our worst defender.

“Beilein should never have played Dawkins that much when his defense was so bad.”

It’s pretty easy being negative.

I think it’s fine to say Dawkins was a poor defender but I do believe people are overstating it. At the end of the day he only played 13 mpg and had his minutes cut large for certain stretches and the team was still poor defensively. Dawkins is an easy scapegoat nobody is going to call out any other player for their crap D. Look at some of these numbers.

Dawkins 4 mins against Maryland in 86-82 loss, Maryland shoots 54%. Maybe Dawkins was awful in those 4 mins but I bet there were other culprits.

Purdue 87-70 loss. Dawkins 12 minutes, Purdue hits 76% of their shots in the 2nd half. Dawkins plays 4 minutes enters down 10, taken out when down 7. Doesn’t return until 2-3 mins left down 15.

Purdue 17 point loss in B1G Tourney 11 minutes. Purdue shoots 52% for the game. Plays 3 minutes in first half and is a +4 while out there left when the game was tied. Enters in the 2nd half when team was down 15 leaves after 7 minutes and the team is down 10.

I am well aware that ± is the best indicator but if Dawkins enters these games and isn’t a net negative I don’t know how we can paint him with the brush of being a horrible defender. Let’s look at guys who played 30+ mpg instead of a guy playing 13 mpg.

Maybe this year this will be a terrific defensive team and Dawkins was the biggest issue I have my doubts about that though. Easy to find a scapegoat though.

There are a lot of improvements to be made for individual players.

Robinson becoming a better 3 point shooter in conference when the lights are on, improving his dribbling and explosiveness so teams will respect his game more.

Walton becoming a threat inside the arc shooting inside the arc at 37%. Easy for opponents to guard when you’re not a threat to hit shots consistently.

Dawkins developing a clue defensively.

In general this team has to become a lot more aggressive period on the offensive and defensive end. Far too often on offense this team tries to lay the ball in instead of dunking it. Irvin and Donnal are the biggest culprits when it comes to that.

So you agree that Dawkins didn’t have a clue defensively…

Dawkins was on the court for about a minute in the 2nd half and Koenig blew right by him and was put right back on the bench for Robinson and then it was his turn to get blown by.

So you DID watch the games and draw the same conclusions we all did about Dawkins defense.

I don’t think he’s particularly good on defense but I am not willing to make the correlation that the team was poor on defense because Aubrey Dawkins was poor on defense. Dawkins was merely a symptom that has plagued this team for the past few years. Stauskas was an awful defender but great on offense but he might find himself out of the league because he can’t guard anybody. Robinson was put at a disadvantage at times because he was forced to guard 4s. It isn’t far fetched to say Beilein has trouble identifying guys that can play defense.

Yes he didn’t have a clue defensively much like 3 or 4 others on the team. Defense is geared from the top on down if your PG is inconsistent on defense, lacks agility it puts everybody else at a disadvantage. Far too many times this team was beaten by penetration.

You still don’t get it and I am not surprised. Why try and blame a guy for being a poor defender when he had very little impact on the team? Yep he was a poor defender. Why didn’t he improve on defense? Who recruited him? Dawkins isn’t the only poor defender on this team and won’t be the last. I am sure this will be a lock down defensive team now that Dawkins isn’t around…

I think there’s a difference between a poor and horrible defender. I would say Robinson was a horrible defender. Do you think we would be better off talking about the merits of each player defensively or spend more time talking about a player that will have zero impact on the D this year.

There was some talk about Watson I don’t know how well he will do I would be surprised if he played much at all. Beilein loves his 7-8 man rotations and right now I don’t see him part of that.

This debate is about Ibi Watson coming in to replace Dawkins, given that they play the same position and will see similar minutes. The gist of what people have said revolve around Ibi perhaps not being as good at shooting but making up for it by being a better defender than Dawkins, who you, as HTYV kindly proved with your quotes, think is a terrible defender. Anyone with a pair of eyes could see he was the worst on the team. Thus, that makes Ibi’s job of replacing him easier. This conversation has literally nothing to do with who’s responsible for why we as a team were bad. Not a fucking thing about specifically how bad Dawkins made it. Your lack of comprehension about what this is even about is utterly baffling. You are arguing a point that no one even made! It amazes me how you try and start these arguments out of nothing! Like I said earlier, very troll-like behavior.

I personally have zero respect for people who come on here for what seems like the sole intent of starting things. I liked dAwkins as stated many times. I also like ibi much more after his last video was released.i felt like he showed a lot more there than previously. Nice vision, nice handle and the ability to create. I also liked how his competition level looked high for a public league. Battle tested. I’m optimistic he will be a solid wing for us over the next few years. Hopefully right away but at least the next few years he should be useful.
