Michigan WBB Thread

We are all thankful the men’s team looks to pretty much wrapped up their spot in the tournament (barring a late collapse and several upsets in conference tournaments). But during this, the women’s basketball program is having perhaps their best season in history. Thought we could have a thread to track how the rest of their season goes.

A little background to this season: The women’s basketball program is historically one of the poorest in the Big Ten. Our 16-17 team currently has tied the highest win% for any season in program history (finished 22-8 in '99-00). Just a couple weeks ago, the women’s team was sitting at 10-2 in Big Ten play and had an outside shot at getting a share of the conference title. However, they’ve since lost 3 of 4, including a sellout home game against Michigan St. Despite the lackluster finish, the women’s basketball program looks to be moving forward and will be a solid team each season as long as Kim Barnes Arico is around.

The Big Ten Tournament is set to start this week (why women’s basketball only plays 16 games, I have no idea…). Michigan has a double bye and will most likely play Michigan St in a rematch from the tough loss at Crisler a couple weeks ago. MSU will play the winner of Rutgers/Wisconsin.

A week or so ago, KBA said the team looked a little tight and the last few games seems to have proven her right. Yesterday, with five seconds to go in a tie game, they blew an uncontested layup and then fouled on the rebound which led to the losing free throw.
Still a great season. They need to get refocused for the tournaments. We should be good the next few years.

ESPN’s bracketology for the women’s tournament has us as one of the last four in. I find that interesting considering our conference record, but hey, B1G isn’t a great conference this year and we have played pretty poorly down the stretch, losing 4 of our last 5 and twice against MSU - a team that just a few weeks ago was considered to be on the outside looking in of the tourney and has now jumped us.
